Little Chehaw and Reverend Evan's Uniform
In 1938 and 1939 summer camp for the Boy Scouts in this area was held at what was known as “Little Chehaw” which was a scout camp on the Muckalee Creek just northwest of Americus. The summer camp was organized by the National Office of the Boy Scouts as Chehaw Council was not chartered until 1939. Running the camp for the National Office were Camp Director Bill Cumber, Scoutmaster of Troop 7 in Columbus, Ralph Ellis, (later a Field Executive with Chehaw Council), Assistant Scout Master of Troop 7, and, Robert Gumby, from Troop 2 in Columbus. Reverend O. L. Evans wanted to sell Mr. Ellis his scout uniform. Mr. Ellis did by Rev. Evan's scouting campaign hat. |
